1687 Market

Welcome home.

Art is essential to the cultural life of San Francisco and yet a scarcity of affordable rental housing and affordable performance and rehearsal spaces exist for artists who wish to live here. Two local non-profits, Artists Hub on Market and Mercy Housing California, endeavor to change that by marrying the development of approximately 100 affordable apartments dedicated to artists, production related arts and entertainment workers, arts administrators, and their families with the construction of an integrated arts community center that will cater to artists across San Francisco. The result: 1687 Market.

1687 Market will provide 100% affordable housing — in the form of studio, 1-bedroom, and 2-bedroom units — for artists and their families whose household income is at or below 80% of San Francisco Area Median Income. In addition, the lower four floors of the building will be devoted to fostering a vibrant artist community through the inclusion of rehearsal and practice rooms, a 85-seat black box theatre, and services supporting the arts. Finally, the building will be anchored on the ground floor by a neighborhood-serving café. Once completed, 1687 Market will act as a dynamic hub for artists to enjoy a stable place to live, create, and work, and for neighbors to experience performances in an intimate and easily-accessible location.

1687 Market is situated in the “Hub” neighborhood at Market and Gough where, in the 1920s to the 1950s, several streetcar lines merged. The project is also centrally located at a hub of four vibrant San Francisco neighborhoods — Hayes Valley, Civic Center, the Mission District, and the Castro — and is just steps away from public transit, as well as dozens of arts organizations.
